Pre-requisites: a basic understanding of your camera

Equipment: SLR camera (film or digital), camera manual (or thorough knowledge of your camera), note pad, pen, pencil and highlighter

Requirements: you supply LCD projector (with VGA port), screen, seating, tables, podium, power cord, break refreshments and luncheon

Supplied: Course outline, charts, graphs and hand-outs as required, Note that course notes are not provided, it is up to each individual to take notes (studies show that people retain far more information if they have to write it down)

This 1-day course is a condensed version of the 'gender neutral' (film or digital) 5-session Basic Photography Course and is best suited for groups of 35 or less who already have a basic understanding of their cameras, particularly accessing such camera functions as shutter speed and aperture settings through the various camera menus, buttons and dials. 

Seven hours of lecture time is provided which covers the following topics:

• Camera Overview: Reviewing the basic parts of your camera and their function (bring your manual)
• Shutter Speeds: Their function and role within the final image, how to use shutter speeds effectively to express motion or freeze action
• f-Stops: Lens apertures, their function and role within the final image, how to effective control backgrounds through selective depth of field, as well 'hyper focal distance' and what it means to your images will be discussed
• ISO; The film or sensors' sensitivity to light, how ISO impacts the final image, what ISO is best for which situations. what is 'latitude' and how it can be used effectively
• Correct Exposure: Tying it all together; what is correct exposure and how to obtain correct exposure in spite of your camera and its light meter 
• Light Meters: Both reflective and incident meters, how they work and which is best used when, exploring grey cards and their uses
• Basic Flash Photography: Once you know the basics of flash photography you will be better equipted to take control of your final results (electronics today have complicated and confused the basics which you should know)
• Lens Selection: Focal lengths and how their optical distortions can effectively be used within your images
• Tripods and Accessories: Exploring which accessories will actually make you a better photographer, and which only get in the way
• Basic Composition: Picture space and balance, getting started on taking better composed pictures
